As they began fancying homemade pie for dessert, engaging and light hearted conversation descended into pointless, self-serving argumentation which uncontrollably pinballed around the table.
During this frenzied ruction of wrangling words, the youngest grandchild innocently wondered why nobody bothered to stop speaking and start listening.

The child’s observation is wise, but I can’t help but notice that you have pictured my exact pie right down to the glass pan. I’m guessing there’s a Fannie Farmer cookbook nearby.

This scene plays out so many times throughout my life… why does no one wish to listen? Do they become less important? Is it possible for the pie to be complete without the nuts?

Out of the mouths of babes, for sure. Awesome picture, and a powerful reminder for this one who to often forgets to listen.
Biblical direction tells us, “be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (James1:19) but most adults are to busy planning their own response to really listen (guilty myself of doing this). God works in strange ways, I recently had to have surgery on my tongue and I am doing a lot more listening these days and learning that many of my friends and acquaintances have some pretty good idea. 🙂
