I managed to hit the back wall and get a small cut above my left eye which bled onto the concrete floor.
Then, bleeding in the darkness, I heard the door at the top of the stairs slam shut!

Scattered thoughts were laden with the unknown as I desperately clung to a rapidly fading glimmer of confidence.
With a dusty dry mouth and outstretched sleepwalking-like arms, I reflexively swallowed and began moving forward.

In the darkness, about twenty feet away,  I saw what appeared to be two rapidly swirling clouds of dust.
I glanced up the staircase and momentarily gained a sense of solace from what was now my only source of light.

At the bottom,  where the staircase meets the floor, I double-stepped and fell forward.
Laying on my back, after deflecting off the wall, I realized there was no longer any light.

Half asleep and in bare feet, I descended the rug covered stairs with a thumping heart in my chest.
A dusty 40 watt failed to provide enough of a path to the baffling noise that woke me up in the first place.
