The close-knit family of seven, who congregate every Sunday for supper since his deployment last year, optimistically tell stories and share shoulders around a table set for eight.
Like a loud stereo suddenly unplugged, deafening silence befell the breathless room as unified smiling eyes observed a polished yellow taxi proudly delivering their distinguished hero.

Amazing and enchanting. Your writing makes me feel like I am having dinner with that family and am welcoming the hero as well. Also the symbolism of the light being on is beautiful. Thank you!

I do believe I sucked back a sob until I read the young hero was getting out. So many stories end with officers coming to the door with the saddest news ever spoken.

Great post. We were at Fort Campbell Airfield in Kentucky when our nephew arrived home from Iraq. It was a wonderful experience welcoming our hero back.
